Ghana’s President, John Mahama, has announced plans to introduce a visa-free policy for all African visitors, in a move aimed at strengthening regional ties and boosting economic activity.
The policy is set to take effect on 25 May, which is observed annually as Africa Day.
President Mahama made the announcement during the inaugural state visit of Zimbabwe’s president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, to Ghana.
The government says the initiative forms part of efforts to reinforce Ghana’s long-standing identity as a centre of Pan-Africanism, while also encouraging tourism and increasing trade within the continent.
Officials indicate that the visa-free arrangement will be integrated into a broader electronic visa (e-visa) system expected to be launched next month.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry, led by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has also pledged to expand securing more Visa Waiver Agreements for Ghanaian passport holders.
